Reishi Preservation
Drying reishi mushrooms is a great way to preserve them for later use. There are several methods that can be used to dry reishi mushrooms, with each method having its own benefits. The three most common methods are using an oven, a food dehydrator, or the natural sun. Of these three methods, using a food dehydrator is generally the preferred method as it allows for even drying without taking up valuable oven space. However, the method you choose will ultimately depend on the equipment you have available and the climate conditions in your area.
If you choose to dry reishi mushrooms in the oven, it is a simple process. Slice the mushrooms into quarter inch pieces and arrange them in a single layer on a baking sheet. Set the oven to a low heat, between 150-170°F, and cook the mushrooms for an hour on each side. Make sure to check the mushrooms periodically until they snap when bent, indicating they are completely dry.
If you choose to dry reishi mushrooms in a food dehydrator, the process is even easier. Simply slice the mushrooms and arrange them on the dehydrator trays, making sure to leave space between each slice for proper airflow. Set the dehydrator to 110 degrees Fahrenheit and let the mushrooms dry for 4-6 hours for regular slices and 2-3 hours for antler reishi. Once the mushrooms are completely dry, they can be stored in an airtight container for future use.
If you prefer to dry reishi mushrooms in the sun, it is also a viable option. Place the sliced mushrooms in a sunny, dry location, preferably on a basket or woven mat to allow air circulation. This process can take 1-2 days depending on the climate. Ensure they are protected from moisture, insects, and animals.
Step | Description |
---|---|
1 | Place the sliced mushrooms in a sunny, dry location |
2 | Preferably on a basket or woven mat to allow air circulation |
3 | Protect from moisture, insects, and animals |
Once the mushrooms are completely dry, they should be stored in an airtight container with a desiccant, such as a silica gel pack, to keep them dry. They should be kept in a cool, dark place to avoid sunlight damage. Properly stored, dried reishi mushrooms can last for a year or more.
